Residence - Biome

Guest house at Sirsi

Designed for a an extended family, most of whom have now moved out of Sirsi, this is a private guest house for the family for its yearly get togather during the annual car festival in the local temple. Able to accomodate 40 people in its two dormitories and three bedrooms, this building also has a large dining area and a kitchen.
It is entered by crossing a nallah over a small foot bridge. A disabled friendly ramp leads one to the large Jagli or verandah. This part of the building which is built out of laterite also has a brick vault. There are three projecting balconies which project out onto the areca plantation in the front. The rest of the walls are built out of stabilized mud bricks.

Other significant features of house include a double roof, which is a combination of pre-cast "flat-panels" and mangalore tiles. This roof keeps the dormitories cool. The building has a large sump tank which harvests enough water for the cooking and drinking needs of the occupants. It treats all its water and this water is reused for flushing the toilets.
